One From the Left (A Finger Play)

A new and original finger play from Jim Gill! The music wonderfully “illustrates” the motions for the fingers…..so listen closely as you play! The song is available on Jim’s latest CD, Vote for Jim Gill.

2017-2018 Nationwide Campaign for Play:

I have had a great year of family concerts, school visits and conference appearances for early childhood professionals. It has been a wonderful mix of events! I love actively leading the play in my family concerts. And the training sessions and conference appearances allow me to continue to reflect on why play is so important in the lives of the children we all care for. It is rewarding to share my ideas with dedicated professionals –teachers, care providers and librarians - and to be able to remind them of what they know “deep down” but sometimes need ways to express in their own community advocacy: that play is the context where young children develop and express abilities across all domains of development – physical, cognitive, communicative and social/emotional.

I am looking forward to what is coming up on my calendar! I have visits scheduled to Arizona, Kansas, Washington, Texas, California, Ohio, Michigan, Maryland and Missouri. I am especially excited about a week of trainings for children’s librarians all over the state of Indiana at the end of September. And, of course, there will lots of appearances here in my home state of Illinois.

If you are interested in scheduling a concert or professional training event in your community, please contact me. I’d LOVE to visit! My musical games are only “working” when folks are playing them!

Words on Play

Last month I visited the Las Vegas-Clark County Library System for a series of concerts and recalled my last visit there. During a stop on that tour, two years ago, I entered the meeting room at one of the branches and noticed a colorful banner on the wall.   After a double take I realized that it contained the lyrics to my song “List of Dances.”

Of course I was excited to see the words in full color and made sure to include a read-along and dance-along of that song during my concert that day!

Over the years I have been honored to see, in person, and receive photos of a number of these hand-made List(s) of Dances. I enjoy the thought that each of these signs is an indication that my song is a favorite at a library story time or in a classroom. But I most enjoy thinking about the process – the play – that goes into the creation of the sign.
